Cyclic Complexity of Words

چکیده
We introduce and study a new complexity function on words, that we call cyclic complexity, which counts the number of conjugacy classes of factors of each given length. We extend the famous MorseHedlund theorem to the setting of cyclic complexity by showing that a word is ultimately periodic if and only if it has bounded cyclic complexity. Unlike most complexity functions, cyclic complexity distinguishes between Sturmian words having different slopes. More precisely, we prove that if x is a Sturmian word and y is a word having the same cyclic complexity of x, then y is Sturmian and, up to renaming letters, has the same language of factors of x.

The effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction: Implications for online learning
This study investigated the effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction in two online debates. Knowledge construction was assessed using Gunawardena et al.’s Interaction Analysis Model (1997). Language complexity was determined by dividing the number of unique words by total words. It refers to the lexical variation. The results showed that...
متن کاملOn the effect of grain size on rock behavior under cyclic loading by distinct element method
It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of rocks under cyclic loading is much different from static loading conditions. In most constructions, the load applied to structures is within dynamic ranges. That’s why a great deal of attention has been paid towards this field in order to identify the dynamic behavior of rocks in more details. Nevertheless, the nature of dynamic failure in rocks ...
متن کاملA linear time algorithm for Shortest Cyclic Cover of Strings
Merging words according to their overlap yields a superstring. This basic operation allows to infer long strings from a collection of short pieces, as in genome assembly. To capture a maximum of overlaps, the goal is to infer the shortest superstring of a set of input words. The Shortest Cyclic Cover of Strings (SCCS) problem asks, instead of a single linear superstring, for a set of cyclic str...
متن کاملCounting Words of Minimum Length in an Automorphic Orbit
Abstract. Let u be a cyclic word in a free group Fn of finite rank n that has the minimum length over all cyclic words in its automorphic orbit, and let N(u) be the cardinality of the set {v : |v| = |u| and v = φ(u) for some φ ∈ AutFn}. In this paper, we prove that N(u) is bounded by a polynomial function with respect to |u| under the hypothesis that if two letters x, y with x 6= y occur in u, ...
متن کاملA Gray code for fixed-density necklaces and Lyndon words in constant amortized time
This paper develops a constant amortized time algorithm to produce a cyclic cool-lex Gray code for fixed-density binary necklaces, Lyndon words, and pseudo-necklaces. It is the first Gray code for these objects that achieves this time bound. The algorithm is applied: (i) to develop a constant amortized time cyclic Gray code for necklaces, Lyndon words, and pseudo-necklaces ordered by density an...
